A few months back, I posted an article on Hyderabad's traffic woes. The first eight lane highway in the country (!), the Outer Ring Road project, to be finished by 2008, will do much to address them, apart from creating new areas for investment, development and employment generation. The high vehicle speeds possible, it's coverage and it's size (160 KM. and 8 lanes) will give a massive boost to trade and transport in and around Hyderabad.

It'll serve as a bypass to vehicles, esp. heavy vehicles, which solely pass via Hyderabad, thereby reducing the traffic congestion inside the city.

This is a good development. However, this is just the beginning as there's a lot of work to be done as the city has earned a bad reputation because of its slow moving traffic and congestion. Here, in Delhi, the traffic moves so fast that you rarely find any traffic jams. Any jam is quickly freed .

I dont know how things are in Hyderabad but I bet it has got only worse. The population is growing at astronomical rates. This must be treated as some sort of a future emergency and the men in power must take up more such projects, if Hyderabad shouldnt become another Bangalore.
